How Many SAP Customers Have Migrated to S/4HANA — And How Many Are Left?

Updated: Sep 2

ree

The push to migrate from SAP ECC to S/4HANA is stronger than ever, fueled by SAP’s 2027 end-of-support deadline for ECC. But how far along is the market in this transition? And how many organizations are still running their legacy ECC environments? Understanding the adoption landscape can help you make informed migration decisions.

Migration Progress in 2025

Recent research from leading industry analysts and SAP community sources shows that about 28% to 33% of organizations have already completed their move from SAP ECC to S/4HANA by early 2025. This reflects a steady increase of roughly 10% over the last two years, signaling growing momentum but also highlighting that a sizeable majority remains on ECC.

Another 40% to 41% of SAP ECC users are currently in the implementation or transition phase, actively working through migration projects. This means over two-thirds of SAP customers are preparing for or have started their S/4HANA journey.

Meanwhile, around 20% of companies are still evaluating the business case for migration, weighing cost, complexity, and operational impacts before committing.

What Lies Ahead?

The industry consensus predicts that by the time ECC mainstream maintenance ends in 2027, about 57% of customers will have fully migrated to S/4HANA. Extended support agreements will allow some organizations to stay on ECC beyond this date, but the pressure is mounting.

By 2030, SAP expects migration rates to surge to approximately 80%, with the majority of the remaining customers transitioning over the following decade. These timelines reflect the complex and multi-year nature of ERP transformations.

Making Your Own Decision

If your organization is still running SAP ECC, you’re in good company—but the writing on the wall is clear. The window to prepare and migrate effectively is narrowing. Understanding where you stand compared to the broader ecosystem can shape your business case and migration roadmap.

With these insights, organizations can benchmark their SAP migration progress, understand industry trends, and strategically plan their digital transformation for a future-ready enterprise.
